Australian and New Zealand Association for the Treatment of Sexual Abuse

The Forensic Assessment of Sexual Deviance

Presented by: ANZATSA

The assessment of sexual deviance and paraphilic disorders is an important and often controversial topic in forensic mental health. While some have persuasively argued that sexual behaviour should not be pathologised in such a fashion, meta-analytic results have consistently indicated that sexual deviance is the most potent group of risk factors for recidivism amongst sexual offenders.

This full-day workshop will provide participants with a sound understanding of the most prevalent paraphilic disorders encountered in practice, with an emphasis on the most forensically relevant conditions (i.e., paedophilia, exhibitionism, sexual sadism, voyeurism, and frotteurism). However, recognising rarer paraphilic behaviours will also be covered. The evolution of diagnostic criteria for paraphilic disorders in the various editions of the DSM will be critically discussed. Practical challenges for the assessment and management of sexual deviance will be noted throughout.

Dr Michael Davis is a Forensic and Clinical Psychologist in full time private practice. He is an Adjunct Research Fellow with the Centre for Forensic Behavioural Science at Swinburne University of Technology, an Adjunct Senior Lecturer with the Department of Psychiatry at Monash University, and an Honorary Fellow with the Department of Psychiatry at The University of Melbourne. He has presented nationally and internationally on the topics of sexual deviance, risk assessment, psychopathy, offender profiling, equivocal death, behavioural crime linkage, and other aspects of sexual and violent crime. He has provided behavioural investigative advice to police in several different countries and is the only mental health professional in Australia to be elected to membership of the FBI-affiliated International Criminal Investigative Analysis Fellowship (ICIAF).
